PTA Halloween Party

October 28th is an early release day, which means that students will be dismissed at 12:30 pm so that teachers can attend an afternoon workshop.  That morning the Harrisville Fire Department will be at WMS to teach us about fire safety and show us the fire trucks and equipment.  Since it is the Friday before Halloween, students are allowed to wear costumes that day.  Please make sure they have something to change into if they are uncomfortable in their costume.  Also, no weapons are allowed at school, so costumes should not include fake guns, swords, etc.  We will have small party after an early lunch

It is the time of year where layers are important because the temperature can vary so much outside as well as inside the school building. Just sending in a heavy winter coat on some days doesn’t provide students the ability to layer up with a sweatshirt of fleece if temperatures warm up during the day or if your child becomes chilled while inside the building.  If you would like to send in a sweatshirt, long sleeve t-shirt or fleece to keep at school we have space in our cubbies to store them.   Hats and gloves are often required for children to go outside for recess this time of year. Please make sure gloves and hats are worn or packed each day until spring
Ask your child about this “next step” sign.

Reminder to Students/Parents

Don’t forget that if your child wears rain or snow boots to school they must bring in a pair of shoes to change into. Wearing boots while in class not only tracks dirt around the school, the boots can become a loud distraction during the school day.

Take Home Book Volunteers- I need a volunteer who could help tear out and staple the small take-home books that the students will bring home as homework throughout the year.  This could be done at home if you prefer.  Other ways to help our school- be a room parent, help in the library, join the PTA, attend school board/town meetings, put up a bulletin board, read to or with students, be a field trip chaperone, and more! Please look for a volunteer checklist in your Monday folder soon and consider volunteering if you can.  However, we understand if your schedule does not allow!

Returning to school each fall is a difficult transition for students, parents, and teachers!  This year the first week includes four school days which will be challenging for some!!  It will take several weeks for all students to get back into routines and showing signs of being able to manage the crazy school year schedules most families have to deal with (including my own family!)  Please do as much as you can do to keep routines exactly that- routine. Two of the most important things you can do each day to help your child succeed in school are to provide a healthy breakfast to begin the day and a consistent reasonable bedtime.  Remember most children this age still require 10-12 hours of sleep a night to be well rested.  Doing so will greatly benefit your child’s academic success.

Most days students will find a comfortable spot in the room and enjoy a book or two during DEAR time. DEAR stands for Drop Everything And Read. Occasionally during DEAR we read in pairs, but more often students will be exploring books on their own.  My goal is to get students used to pulling out a book and reading for a few minutes for enjoyment alone.  I have had several parents in the past start DEAR time at home and it usually becomes an enjoyable time for the child (and the parent!) to get some reading done at home that is not part of their homework.  THE most important thing you can do for your child’s success in school is provide reading time every day for practice.  Children at this age are not too old to be read to by an adult.  In fact, this is very important for children to hear adults model their favorite stories with expression.

Many weeks I send home a classroom newsletter.  If you ever have a question or concern, I do check my email every day at least a couple of times.  I should be able to reply that same day with  either an answer to your question or a quick reply that I need to look into something.  But either way you can usually expect a reply within 24 hours during the week, and most days on the weekends.  However, for immediate needs, please call, send in a short note addressed to me, or stop in and talk to me in person) so I can be sure to get it before the school day begins.   Feel free to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns.  The best way to reach me is at jthomas@sau29.org.  You can also reach me at school at 827-3272.
